a preview page for my upcoming show ‘skellyopolis’ at the gallery @ yummy wine bar & bistro is up, the tab of which is located on the left hand column.  please take a moment to view the preview page, as 'skellyopolis' is the first show I’ve ever assembled to feature sketches and art from any of my 40+ published books.  this show is all about skelly the skeleton girl and her dog, femur.

as always, thank you for visiting my site and i hope you enjoy your visit.

i’ve updated the upcoming events page, finally titling my next show starting on january 7, 2010 at the gallery @ yummy wine bar & bistro.  the show titled ‘skellyopolis’ is my first show to feature skelly the skeleton girl and her dog, femur.  the show consist of concept sketches from the two skelly books as well as three limited edition prints of final art from the books created exclusively for the show.  there is also one surprise print of original design i also created just for this show.  ‘skellyopolis’ is very exciting, as it is the first time i have sold original works related to the design of any of my books and is a direct response to many of you requesting such a show.

i will be at the opening on january 7th, if you are in the area, please stop in and say hello.

enjoy,
jimmy

NOTE:  due to yet another influx of emails about future shows on the north coast of oregon, the gallery @ yummy wine bar & bistro is the ONLY gallery in the area i show my work.  as stated in the post from 11-10-07, I DO NOT and WILL NOT show my work indefinitely at the gallery in astoria, contrary to what many of you have been told by that establishment.  also to answer the second question, i am not affiliated with that gallery as an artist, an owner, or participant in any way shape or form and have not been for 3+ years. i personally apologize to those of you who have been given misinformation and hope this clarifies your questions.

what started as a simple post of some information, turned into a big re-vamp of some portions of my site.  here is some of what is new from this re-vamp.

you may have already noticed the halloween themed jimmy pickering at the top of the page commemorating my favorite holiday.  if you want to see it animated visit my blog, it's pretty silly.

there is a new page titled, ‘some tid bits about me,’ where you will find a more informative bio, a list of my publishing credits and a page of blah, blah . . . blah.

the galleries have been consolidated into new easier to understand categories.  art, black and white art, dimensional art and digital art.  each has it’s own home page explaining the content with-in and the galleries appear as drop sub categories below the main gallery descriptors.

i also updated the 'upcoming events' page with my shows for 2010.  the content here has been reorganized with the shows listed from upcoming to past.

a thank you to everyone who has been emailing and posting on my guest book.  i apologize for my lack of response to all of you and to updates at this site as well, my schedule is currently overloaded with work, (not a complaint, just a time constraint), which has not given me ample time to write all of you back or post frequent updates.

thank you for your visit and i hope you enjoy your time here.

enjoy,
jimmy

my new book Skelly & Femur has been released, the follow-up to Skelly the Skeleton Girl. where the original book Skelly the Skeleton Girl is about Skelly finding a bone, Skelly & Femur follows Skelly and her new dog Femur on a mystery of missing objects through and around Skelly Manor.

as with the first book, this is an easy read written for pre-schoolers and kindergarteners with the illustrations the main focus of the storytelling.

in this book there are a few surprised hidden within the illustrations.  being a former walt disney imagineer there are several hidden mickey’s throughout the book for sharp eyes to discover, (i won't say how many you'll have to see if you can find them all).  also in tribute to the inspiration i found in the original version of 1977's star wars there is a hidden princess leia and death star within the book for sharp eyes to locate also.

for more information on ordering your copies of Skelly & Femur, simply visit the books page on the left and click the order link for Skelly & Femur.

as always thank you for your visit.

hi everyone

you may have notices a few things are changing around my site.  i removed my recent show specific galleries and combined the images into the four permanent gallery pages.  i’ve also added a '3-D gallery' page to share some of my dimensional work and prepping the way for more in the future.  a new page titled 'from u' which features photos and drawings sent to me from you which i want to share with other visitors to my site.

there's a new jimmy pickering logo appearing on this site and my blog.  speaking of my blog, if you haven’t viewed it, it’s time you do.  you will find lots of tit-bits from life and work which are exclusive to the blog.  (i also jazzed up the jimmy pickering logo there, but you have to go look for yourself to see what i’m speaking of.)

as always, a thank you to each and every one of you for visiting my site, posting in my guest book and sending me emails, it's always great to hear from you.

happy new year.

hi everyone:

i’ve started a new post on my blog called ‘on my desk.’  it is literally a snapshot of what is currently happening on my desk at the time of the post.  since i have such a mixture of projects going on i thought it fun for you to see what’s being created in my studio.

my show INVASION! continues at dva gallery in chicago.  the show features eight all new pieces in a larger scale than i’ve worked in the past.  all the paintings are 10”x 10” rather than my smaller format of 5”x 5” or 6”x 6”.  take a look at the show on the ‘INVASION!’ page on this site, or head over to www.dvagallery.com to view the new pieces as well.  The show runs through august 8, 2008.

i am putting the finishing touches on my next show which open august 28, 2008 at the gallery @ yummy wine bar & bistro.  it is a duo show with my very talented friend and artist maura cluthe.  the show is titled ‘NUTZ + BOLTZ: a robot show’ and features all new work by the both of us.  check out the upcoming events page for more information on this upcoming show.

hi everyone:

the past six weeks have been very project heavy and the reason for a lack of updates.  i’ve just completed two large book projects.  one of which i am very happy to share with you is a follow up book to skelly the skeleton girl.  titled skelly & femur, it is a new mystery featuring skelly and her dog, femur.  although it seems a long way off, the book will be released in about a year from now in 2009.

thank you to everyone who made my piece in the national doodle day rank in the top 10 of 175 celebrity doodles auctioned for the fundraiser.  i am very thankful and grateful the piece was so well received and helped in setting a record for nf, inc, (the national non-profit organization that supports families affected by neurofibromatosis), by raising over $28,000.

another giant thank you to everyone who has been sending emails and posting entries in my guest book.  due to my workload i’ve not been able to respond right away, but i will do my best to get to them as soon as possible.

with my book projects completed, i have switched gears and am working in earnest on the new paintings for all of my upcoming shows.  i’ll be posting some of those images as the pieces are completed.  would you be interested in seeing a post or two of the works in progress?  it is something i've not done before, but thought a progress of sketch to finished painting might be of interest to some of you.

yesterday, june 5th, i received my copies of the movie poster i illustrated for the animation show 4.  it is freak’n crazy to see.  the poster is so big and the painting i did for it seems . . . huge.  it turned out really well, the colors are spot on and the clarity as well as quality of the printing is smoochable.   thank you to everyone at the animation show for making the project so much fun to create!

i have posted new photos at the bottom of gallery 04 of the custom labbit i created for the through the rabbit hole show at rivet gallery in columbus ohio.  the title, bunnybot 3.  the piece has sold.  thank you to laura at rivet gallery for the great photos of my labbit.

hi everyone:

a huge apology to all of you for the lack of updates on my site as of late, I have been swamped with work.   that is a great thing, but causes me to put the site and blog on the back burner.

that being said, i am thrilled to share i have created a movie poster for the animation show 4.  you can see the poster is on the home page.  the poster was a lot of fun to create and i want to thank everyone at the animation show for making this project so much fun to be a part of.  the poster is now showing up in different cities around the country where the animation festival is taking place.  for more information on The animation Show 4 and when it will be showing near you please click this link, www.animationshow.com there you will see not only the new poster and dates for the festival, but list of films and all sorts of information on the animation show.

also, when the show makes it's way to portland oregon this summer, the animation show has asked me to be there to sign posters for the guest of the show.  i'll post more information on this event as it becomes available.

that is it for now, there is much more to share over the next couple of days.

hi everyone:

i apologize for my lack of updates this month.  so much has been going on.

currently i am working on three book projects, all of which are very different from each other.  as a treat, i am posting a few of the final illustrations from one of the books on the digital gallery 01 page.  they are the first three images posted within the gallery.

thank you to everyone who has been visiting the site and for all the great posts in my guestbook and the emails.  to answer one persons question of “are my paintings really done in oils?”  i am happy to say yes they are and thank you for the compliment in thinking they were to crisp and colorful not to be.

hope you enjoy your visit to my site and the preview images.

greetings everyone:

it’s been a while since my last post.  i’m working on several book projects and the holidays are coming too, which makes for a great and busy time.

super groovy friend and fantastic artist maura cluthe and i have begun creation of our collaborative show which will premier on august 28, 2008 at the gallery in yummy wine bar and bistro.  i know the date sounds far off, but when you’re creating the art for the show, it is just around the corner.  our beginning work on this exhibit has brought to my attention . . . i’m embarrassed i didn’t notice it sooner . . .  i never posted a link to maura’s site on the link page of my site.  sorry maura!  please take the time to visit www.frag-ment-ed.com or head over to the link page to visit maura’s site.  her work is amazing and I’m proud to be doing a collaborative show with her.

the galleries have been shuffled around.  a little cleaning to remove some images to make room for new pieces i’ll be posting in the near future.

as always thank you for stopping by and enjoy.

jimmy

hi everyone:

below you will find a copy of a post made on my blog yesterday.  the post was generated as a result of your many emails regarding a noticeable change at lunar boy gallery.  since all of you do not go to my blog when you visit this site, i’ve also posted the answer to your question here to give you more clarity on the change.

as always, thank you for stopping by.

enjoy,
jimmy

The Answer is . . .

This past month I have been inundated via email and in person regarding what many of you have called “a noticeable change at Lunar Boy Gallery.”  Maybe this influx is the result of my recent and last show at the gallery during the month of October.  The answer for this change is simple, I no longer own Lunar Boy Gallery. I sold my interest in the gallery almost a year and a half ago.

To allow the new owner a chance to get their bearings, I was asked by her not to make a public announcement after the sale, however, given the length of time which has passed and having so many of you ask me directly of the change it is time to make very clear I am no longer involved or in any way affiliated with Lunar Boy Gallery and no longer show any of my work in the gallery as an artist.  Any noticeable change in the gallery since my leaving is simply because Lunar Boy is under new ownership and the owner is taking the gallery in a different direction she feels comfortable with, away from my original vision and concept established when Lunar Boy Gallery opened.

I want to thank all of you for letting me know how much you enjoyed and now miss the original Lunar Boy I was part of creating. It was a fun chapter in my life, which now has been closed. Here’s to the excitement of new and healthier chapters in the future!

hi everyone:

i've been a bit busy these days and am working on quite a few projects which I will update you on at a later date.  i know i had previously posted this page would be replaced by my new blog, but i've decided to keep this page and add the blog as it's own entity.  this way i am able to continue to let you know what is new on the site with my "what's new and groovy" page and the blog will be able to take on a more personal side with not only work related images but also, updates on life, trips, outings or simply things i find inspiration in.

as always thank you for stoping by my site and i hope you enjoy yourself.

hi everyone:

my solo show, sweet, sweet evil opened last night and what an opening.  it was crazy wonderful.  the gallery was packed all evening and within the first hour almost the entire show had sold.  by the end of the opening only 5 of the original 26 pieces were available.  it was an amazing evening.  a huge thank you to everyone who came to the sweet, sweet evil opening and to those of you who purchased pieces from the show.

now that the show has opened, all of the pieces are now posted in a gallery of their own.  to see the paintings and the “potion bottles” take a look at the “sweet, sweet evil” gallery.  i hope you enjoy the work as much as i enjoyed creating it.

that’s it for now and as always, thank you for visiting.

jimmy

hi everyone:

your enjoyable emails keep pouring in and thank you to everyone who continues to send them.  they are so inspiring.  thank you.  i am working diligently on my solo show, which opens on october 13th, which means this time before the opening of the show is a bit like finals crunch in college.  as a result i have little time for anything besides painting and my email responses are sporadic at best.  however, i will respond to all of your enjoyable emails as soon as crunch time is over so please don’t stop sending them.  they are a better boost to my energy than my cup of coffee at 3am while painting.

hi everyone

as you can see the site has change it’s look a bit.  i thought since the leaves have started to change, why not reflect that on the site.   although things may look a bit different, everything is still where it has always been.  change is good.

i want to thank everyone who has been emailing me.  thank you, thank you, thank you!  at this moment i am buried deep in completing my solo show “sweet, sweet evil” which opens on saturday october 13th.  due to this, my response to all of your enjoyable emails will be tardy.  i will respond once i have completed the show.  thank you for your understanding.

some great news for “skelly the skeleton girl,” the book received a great review in publishers weekly on September 24.  hurray and thank you to everyone at simon & schuster for believing in the book.

the print made from “skelly the skeleton girl" for the 2007 society of illustrators show in nyc, (seen above), turned out so great, i am doing a limited edition of 10 for my show.  the print was created for me by noah fine art and measures 40” x 16”.  it’s quite amazing to see this image so vibrant and in such a large scale.  a thank you to noah and everyone at noah fine art for doing such a fantastic job producing the print.

i've got to get back to my painting, so that's all for now.

enjoy,
jimmy

i’m currently wrapping up my painting for the copro nason gallery's “blab! Show: devil in design,” a group show which opens on september 8th.  for more information go to the “upcoming events” page.  needless to say, given the title of the show, it is a devil.  i will post the painting once it is completed.

my new book “skelly the skeleton girl” is now available.  the book has been getting great reviews and this week, we got some really fantastic news.  “skelly the skeleton girl” has been chosen to be in the 27th annual society of illustrators 2007 original art show.  the show will run October 25th through november 22nd at the society of illustrators in new york city.  more details on the show are posted on the “upcoming events” page.

hi everyone.

this really has nothing to do with my art, but i'm now a simpson . . . see!  i had to share this with everyone because it's quite fun, free and everyone can do it.  just go to this link, http://simpsonizeme.com/ upload a photo of yourself and in a few minutes . . . Woo-hoo! . . . your a simpson character.

people often ask what has inspired me and where my style came from, as opposed to wanting the low down on my career history.  as a result, i've changed my bio page to reflect that interest.  now titled "bio . . . of sorts," i hope it will give you more insight as to what shaped the way I look at things from my creative point of view.  i want to thank my good friend, bruce peterson, (who is also a professional photographer), for doing a photo shoot of me to use both on my site and beyond.  i'm not to keen on photos, but bruce made the experience a lot of fun . . . okay, he made me laugh during the shoot . . . a lot!  thank you bruce.  you can see more of bruce's work through this link, the wade gallery.

enjoy,

hi everyone.

a huge thank you to those of you who came to the dva gallery opening.  another thank you to all who purchased pieces from the show.  what a great experience.  i had a great time in chicago and dva gallery owner david, his wife vicki, son jack and faithful companion hopper made my stay so much fun.  i was only there over the weekend, but we all did so much it's hard to believe we crammed it all into a couple of days.  another huge thank you to them for such a nice stay.

this will be a short update as i've a lot of catching up to do.

enjoy,
jimmy

hello to everyone.

i'm happy to report four of the five original paintings i created for the disney gallery have sold.  the one remaining original is "flower children," based on it's a small world.  i'm also happy to report prints of all five paintings are still available.  the prints look fantastic.  they are archival quality, printed on canvas, signed, numbered and presented in a simple black frame.  they did a great job of reproducing the colors and textures i created on the original paintings.

also, i've received a lot of inquires about the new paintings for the dva gallery show, (gallery 05), coming up on july 21.  for information on purchasing these pieces please contact dva gallery directly, their link is on my "upcoming events" page.  thank you to everyone who has shared how much they like these new pieces.

i'm off to light some fireworks on the beach.  happy 4th of july to everyone!

enjoy,
jimmy

thank you to everyone who came to the artist reception on may 31st at yummy.  four of my nine paintings have sold from the show.  maua cluthe and my pieces are now posted on the yummy wine bar and bistro site.  just click this link, yummy wine bar bistro, go to the “offerings” page and then click “artist reception & gallery.” there you will see all of the paintings in the show.  if you are interested in purchasing any of the pieces how to do so is listed at the bottom of the page.

on june 2nd, was the signing event at the disney gallery in disneyland.  i am so thankful and grateful i was able to share the experience with my good friend kim irvine.  what can i say about the event except i was blown away.  the cast members at the gallery made the event top notch and a life experience i will never forget.  i cannot express my excitement, amazement and the feeling of awe when i walked up the stairs to the disney gallery the day before the signing and saw my paintings hanging directly in front of me as i entered the gallery.  to see my paintings hanging in the space where i had found inspiration when i was younger, it was a dream come true.  then one of the staff members took me into the back room and showed me the prints they made of my five paintings.  they were beautiful, printed on varnished canvas, in simple black frames, amazing.  the next day at the signing the adventure continued.  i met a wonderful group of artist and reconnected with a friend and former imagineer i’d worked with years ago, maggie parr.  for all of you who came to the signing event and to those of you who arrived at the park hours before it opened to make sure you could purchase one of my pieces when the gallery opened its doors, thank you.  i have never been so amazed by a group of fans in my life.  i was humbled by all of the excitement, enthusiasm and support all of you shared with me at the signing.  it was truly a fantastic day.  thank you to everyone involved in putting the event together and to all of you who purchased my paintings and prints.

since my return, i have been diligently working on my solo show coming up on july 21 at the dva gallery in chicago.  the show is titled, “j'ai le diable dans moi,” which translates to “i have the devil in me.”  needless to say, it will be a show of devils.  i’ve posted one of the paintings on the home page as a teaser and will share a few more before the show opens.

i have also finalized a show coming in 2008 at “excellent virtu” gallery at their new location in indianapolis.  the show will be during the month of october 2008.  tom has been trying to get a show set up with me for quite some time and i am extremely excited to be showing with them.

thank you for stopping by.

hi everyone:

there’s a lot going on these passed few weeks.  i’ve finished the illustrations for the fourth araminta spookie book by angie sage, did two holiday gift cards for target's 2007 holiday season, i’ve relocated my studio (which is still in a mild state of confusion), did some large scale illustrations/paintings to be used in a commercial filmed in canada and am readying for two show openings . . . and it is all going so darn good . . . thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

the first is premiering tonight at yummy gallery located in yummy wine bar and bistro, 831 broadway, seaside, oregon.  the show titled "duo: new works by jimmy pickering and maura cluthe" is an exhibit of both my work and my good friend maura's work.  the opening reception is tonight, may 31st, from 6-10pm and i will be there . . . so come by enjoy the show and then have some great wine and food from the yummy menu.  my work for this show is a bit different than my usual style.  i went back to my character animation studies and did a series of paintings based on the old warner brothers and upa animation style.  they are vibrant, bold and graphic.  the pieces will be posted on www.yummywinebarbistro.com for sale after the opening reception.

tomorrow morning, just hours after this reception ends, i board a plane and go down to disneyland for the next show opening.  this show is called “inspired by disneyland, disneyland through the eyes of an imagineer,” is being exhibited in the disney gallery located in new orleans square, above pirates of the caribbean. on the upcoming events page there are two links, one will take you to information on the event and the second will direct you to the art featured in the exhibit. the show opens saturday, june 2nd and I will be at the gallery from 9-11am for a signing event, so please come by and say hello.

that’s all for now, i’ve got to finish packing and then head over to yummy!

enjoy,
jimmy

hi everyone.  this update has been a while in the making, i’ve been focusing on several projects, all of which seem to have the same deadline and i'm relocating my studio at the same time.  it’s a good time of crazy-hectic activity. so this morning i am taking a little break, starting the day by enjoying some coffee and updating my site.

there are some new painting images on the gallery pages; some new black and white work and I’ve added a “digital gallery” per the request of many of you.  this page will be more project based illustration work, as that is the only time i go digital.  the images in this gallery are never 100% digital, but a combination of both traditional techniques and digital.  i’ve started the gallery with a teaser . . . a look at a few illustration from my upcoming book,  skelly the skeleton girl.

i will be a featured artist at a signing event and show opening at the disney gallery in disneyland on saturday, june 2, from 9 –11am.  there will be more details on the “upcoming events” page as soon as the disney gallery provides me a link.  so mark your calendars, it would be great to see you there.

thank you for stopping by to take a look and enjoy.

enjoy,
jimmy

i was told recently, "dyslexia is no big deal."  unfortunately, for those who have it, dyslexia is a "big deal."  i myself have dyslexia and the image to the left is how I see a page from a book, an article from the newspaper, a manuscript, as well as my own artwork.  as you can see, it is a "big deal."  often when i talk at schools or book signings, i share this and many kids with dyslexia or similar learning disorders find it comforting knowing they are not alone in their experience and find inspiration in knowing a grown up was able to do what they've always dreamed of with such a disorder.  some of the symptoms of dyslexia, (not all) are difficulty in learning to read, erratic spelling, lack of facility in manipulating written as opposed to spoken language, transposing numbers & letters and having the inability to understand and execute sentence structure, (i still struggle with this, thank goodness for editors!)  my reason for sharing all of this?  to give insight and understanding to those who think "dyslexia is no big deal."  my hope in sharing i have dyslexia with others who have it or similar learning disorders is to let them know that at times it may be a challenge and you may want to give up trying; don't!  you CAN fulfill your dreams just as i have.   i am thankful and grateful everyday i never gave up and you will be too.

i've received so many emails from those of you who are visiting my site.  thank you for all of the kind words, encouragement and interest in my work.  i enjoy hearing from you.

a question i get asked often is what program i use to create my work, photoshop or painter.  the answer is neither.  all of the work i feature on this site is not created digitally.  i use oils as my medium of choice, also acrylic, ink and graphite.

i sometimes use photoshop on my book project where tight deadlines venture it impossible to create 30+ oil paintings on time.  even then, the work is never 100% digital but a combination of hand painted and drawn elements combined digitally.

i am considering a fan art page.  i receive some great drawing from kids and adults alike which would be fun to share with everyone.  let me know your thoughts about this idea.

i have been working on a group of new paintings.  i will have more information on the show as it becomes available, but for now i can’t say much about these pieces except they are looking really good and i’m very excited about the way they are turning out.

sketches for the fourth araminta spookie book by angie sage have been completed and as soon as i finish the five paintings mentioned above, i will begin finals.

last night my partner took me to see dr. maya angelou in portland oregon.  to say i was amazed by this woman would be an understatement.  one of my favorite books by dr. angelou is titled "i know why the caged bird sings" and i recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading.  all i can say after seeing her in person is what an incredible woman with amazing stories and knowledge to share with us all.

as to what i am up to these days, currently i am working on sketches for the fourth book in the araminta spookie series by angie sage.  i have only four more chapters to complete before the sketches are finished.

today i received from simon & schuster, a copy of their children's publishing catalog for summer 2007 and skelly the skeleton girl has a whole page.  i am so thankful and excited to see the book getting attention.

i have received quite a few emails asking about the painting which created the character skelly.  this is the painting i did in 1998 which evolved into the book skelly the skeleton girl.  she has been redesigned many times as her "story" started taking shape.  a few things remain the same . . . she only wears black and the girl only eats sweets, her favorite of course being black and orange lollypops.

i have added new paintings in all of the galleries and added another painting gallery page, gallery 03.

jimmy

wow!  the response to my new site has been phenomenal.  thank you to everyone who has sent me an email letting me know how much you are enjoying it.  the feedback has made this effort well worth my time.

i have just added a few more sketches from my “night sketch-book” in the black and white gallery, (gallery-04), there is a bit more information on the upcoming events page and i have begun adding links on the "link-age" page.  that makes the site 100% up and running.

again, thank you for all the emails and enjoy your look around.

jimmy

break out the champagne!  the site is complete with the exception of my link-age page.  so take a look around.

the big news for the moment, i received two advanced copies from simon & schuster of my new book “skelly the skeleton girl," which i wrote and illustrated, and . . . it looks amazing!  skelly has taken a long time to bring to life, the original painting of skelly was done in 1998 almost 10 years.  to hold the finished book in my hand . . . okay . . . i'll confess it made me a bit misty.  here is the cover of the book and for those of you who have and will ask when it comes out . . . the release date is august 7, 2007.

enjoy,
jimmy

a bit of good news on the first two books of the araminta spookie series by angie sage which i illustrated, they have won a first place award in the category of children's trade fiction hardcover book series!   something to look forward to, i have just completed book three in the series and am currently working on book four.
